On the north-east cost of Sicily, the ancient city of Tyndaris was founded on a promontory as a Greek settlement in 396 BC. Later occupied by the Romans and destroyed by the the Saracens.
The archaeological site houses some fragments of the city’s ramparts, a Greek theatre and some Roman buildings including a Basilica and the thermal baths. Nearby the excavations, there is a modern Sanctuary housing the Byzantine statue of the “Black Madonna”.
