It is one of the loveliest resorts of the northeast coast. At the top of a promontory which drops straight into the sea stands the Castle successfully assaulted by Giuseppe Garibaldi on July 1860.
The castle was built by the Arabs on the site of the Greek acropolis of Mylaiand enlarged by the following invaders. The 16thSpanish walls enclose a large area with the ancient Duomoand the remains of older buildings.
Don’t miss a visit to Cape Milazzo with a magnificent view of the Aeolian Islands and Mount Etna. From there a flight of steps leads to the Sanctuary of St Anthony of Padua, a little church built in a cave where the saint took refuge after a shipwreck in January 1221.
